Ingrown hairs are caused when a hair becomes trapped beneath your skin and then becomes infected with bacteria. The infected skin around your hair often has a pus-filled center and resembles an acne blemish. Ingrown hairs can erupt anywhere that you repeatedly shave, including the face, underarms and on the bikini line. When ingrown hairs appear on the bikini line, it can be painful and can affect your self-esteem. Luckily, it is easy to treat and prevent ingrown hairs along the bikini line.
Soak Your Skin
Soaking your skin in hot water opens the pores. When your pores are opened, any oils and bacteria that are trapped inside will be able to be flushed out. You can use a few different ways to soak your skin. You could place a hot washcloth over the area, lie back in a hot tub of water or sit in a hot shower. Whichever method you chose, it is important to allow the hot water to rest on the skin for at least 15 minutes.
Exfoliate Your Skin
Exfoliating your skin scrubs away dead skin that exacerbates ingrown hairs and allows your pores to drain out. It is best to exfoliate your skin after the skin has been soaking in hot water for 15 minutes. Use a gentle exfoliant, such as baking soda, which can be massaged into your skin when it is combined with water. After a few minutes of massaging, you can rinse off the area with water.
Use a Shaving Cream that Moisturizes
One mistake many people make is to use soap or shampoo to shave their bikini line. Soaps and shampoos work well to clean hair and skin, but they are not moisturizing enough for shaving. When you shave your skin with a moisturizing shaving cream, you prevent the skin from becoming inflamed and damaged, which can lead to ingrown hairs.
Shave Properly
To avoid future ingrown hairs from occurring, it is important to shave your bikini line properly. Always shave with the grain of the hair. This means you will shave your hair going in the direction that the hair naturally grows. This cuts the hair at an angle that will grow back in correctly, without becoming caught under the skin.
Consider Alternatives
To avoid ingrown hairs altogether, you may want to consider trying an alternative hair removal treatment around your bikini line. If you use a depilatory cream or wax the area, it decreases the risk of having ingrown hairs. This is because depilatory creams chemically remove the hair below the skin. Waxing completely removes the entire hair, root and all. As a result, the hairs around your bikini line will grow back in normally.
