Referred by many different names, a light therapy facial is often called an intense pulsed light facial or IPL. It is also known as a light laser, photo laser or foto facial. Light therapy facials work by targeting laser pulses on deep layers of the skin, while leaving the outer layers undamaged. By stimulating collagen production, this process may help minimize wrinkles on the face.
Uses
Light therapy facials are useful for relieving cosmetic skin complaints, such as fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots, acne scars, large pores, blemishes or a persistent red complexion. Other conditions that may be helped by a light therapy facial include broken capillaries, small birthmarks, freckles, minor sun damage and freckles.
The Procedure
For those who are sensitive to pain, a topical anesthetic may be applied to the face. After the area is numb, a cold gel is applied. Next, a glass prism is placed over the treatment area. Computerized pulses of light are then directed through the prism and onto the skin. Taking 30 to 45 minutes to perform, light therapy facials are generally repeated in a series with three to four weeks in between.
Side Effects
While no recovery time is necessary, the face may be pink and swelled and it should return back to normal within a few days. For some, changes in skin pigmentation may occur. In these cases, it may take three to 12 months for the normal color of the skin to return. Rare complications include bleeding at the site, as well as blistering and scarring.
Caution
LED light therapy will not bring desirable results on every skin type. According to Facial Plastic Surgery.net, those who are dark-skinned or darkly tanned are not good candidates for IPL light therapy. Other persons who are not good candidates include those prone to hyperpigmentation, those who burn easily, pregnant women and insulin-dependent diabetics. In addition, those who are on blood thinners or who are taking herbal supplements such as garlic, ginger and cayenne pepper should avoid IPL treatments.
Cost
The cost of an IPL facial treatment depends on how large of an area is being treated and it can vary according to doctor and location. For a spot test, the average cost in 2010 may range between $20 and $75. To have the entire face treated with an IPL light, you may expect to pay between $350 and $600 per treatment.
