Side Effects of Luvox CR

Luvox CR (fluvoxamine) is a medication used to treat social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Luvox is a serotonin-reuptake inhibitor that aims to balance the neurotransmitters (chemicals) in your brain. The National Library of Medicine indicates that you will typically take 100mg of Luvox CR daily or as your doctor prescribes.

Common Side Effects

According to Drugs.com, Luvox's common side effects include weight loss, a poor appetite, trouble sleeping, diarrhea and constipation. Luvox can also cause decreased libido (sex drive), drowsiness, an upset stomach and dry mouth. Inform your physician if Luvox's symptoms persist for more than 1 week.

Serious Side Effects

The National Library of Medicine says that Luvox can increase your risk of developing suicidal thinking and behaviors. Inform your doctor if your have feelings of depression, agitation, restlessness, hyperactivity and hostility. Luvox might also cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome-like syndrome (NMS) and serotonin syndrome. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include hallucinations, a fast heartbeat, fluctuations in your heartbeat, vomiting and diarrhea. NMS-like syndrome causes muscle stiffness, mental status changes and hyperthermia (high body temperature). Drugs.com indicates that Luvox can also cause seizures, fainting and stiff muscles. Seek emergency medical care if you experience these symptoms.

Additional Concerns

Drugs.com says that you should not take Luvox with alosetron, pimozide or tizanidine. The combination of Luvox with these drugs can increase the risk of side effects. Luvox can also pass into breast milk, so avoid Luvox if you breast feed.
