Cellulite is fat that is deposited in pockets just below the surface of the skin. It occurs around the hips, thighs and buttocks. Because it is very close to the surface of the skin, cellulite leads to a dimpled appearance, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). The Mayo Clinic says special creams and massage techniques that claim to diminish cellulite are a waste of money and time. However, laser therapy may help improve the condition.

Causes

Cellulite is caused by fibrous (rubbery) cords that bond the skin to the muscle that lies beneath. The cords bind the skin to deeper structures, with the fat sitting in the middle. As fat cells gather, they push up against the skin, while the stringy cords pull downward. This causes a bumpy or dimpled surface.

Who's at Risk?

The Mayo Clinic says nearly all women will develop cellulite, while men rarely if ever develop the condition. Although cellulite is harmless, it can be unattractive. According to CosmeticSurgey.com, factors that play a role in the formation of cellulite include genetics, diet, smoking, age and hormones.

Laser and Radiofrequency

Lasers and radiofrequency systems may effectively treat the symptoms of cellulite, according to the Mayo Clinic. Radiofrequency uses a combination of negative tissue massage, infrared light (electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than visible light but shorter than radio waves) and radiofrequency to reduce the signs of cellulite. Lasers use diode laser energy along with tissue massage. Both systems require a series of treatments. The effects are temporary, lasting up to six months.

Endermologie

According to CosmeticSurgery.com, endermologie is a minimally invasive procedure that involves rollers and gentle vacuuming to provide a deep massage and lifting effect to areas with cellulite. This system is intended to loosen the trapped and compressed fat and improve blood circulation. Several treatments are recommended.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy consists of injecting small amounts of medications, amino acids and vitamins into the mesoderm (the middle germ layer that develops into muscle, bone, cartilage, blood and connective tissue) layer of the skin. This procedure is said to break down the cellulite and to improve circulation.

Weight Reduction

A natural treatment for cellulite reduction is losing excess weight, according to the Mayo Clinic. When you burn off extra pounds and build muscle strength in your legs and buttocks, the appearance of cellulite may diminish.

Prevention

Although it's practically impossible to prevent cellulite, the UMMC says a diet rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables can help maintain the tone and texture of your skin. It can also help to drink plenty of water and other fluids and not smoke.
