According to the CDC, between 5 and 20 percent of people in the United States become ill with the flu (influenza) each year. Pregnant women, infants, children and the elderly are more at risk of contracting the flu. People with certain underlying diseases, such as asthma or heart disease, may become severely ill from influenza. It is important to recognize the early signs and symptoms of the flu so that you can receive the proper care. There are antiviral medications on the market that may help shorten the severity and duration of your flu.
Headache and Fever
Headache and fever are common early symptoms after flu exposure. The fever associated with influenza is often high, and sometimes occurs in conjunction with a headache. These symptoms can be treated with acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen.
Tiredness and Muscle Aches
Another common complaint following a flu exposure is tiredness and muscle aches. The fatigue that you may experience could be severe. Rest is essential during this time.
Cough, Sore Throat and Congestion
Some of the earliest symptoms you may experience include a dry cough, sore throat, and a stuffy or runny nose. Decongestants and cough medications may be useful to help alleviate these symptoms. Warm liquids, throat lozenges and gargling with salt water may help ease throat pain.
