How to Grow Your Lashes Longer

Big, lush eyelashes are a beauty asset, yet to get them, most women have to apply gobs of mascara and use eyelash curlers which, ironically, damage eyelashes, causing them to fall out. On average, women lose up to four eyelashes per day according to Dr. William Rassman, founder of the New Hair Institute in California. Losing more than that signals a problem. There are ways to restore the health of your eyelashes and, if all else fails, prescription medications that will help your lashes to grow long and luxurious.

Step 1

Remove eye makeup promptly at the end of the day. Sleeping in mascara and eyeliner damages the lashes by drying them out. Use a high-quality eye makeup remover that contains ingredients including aloe and chamomile.

Step 2

Don't rub your eyes. It sounds like a no-brainer, but if you rub your eyes throughout the day, you're ripping out lashes every time you do it. Also, when you're removing your eye makeup, gently pat the lashes clean instead of rubbing the makeup off.

Step 3

Apply a dab or olive, coconut or almond oil before bed and remove it in the morning with warm water. If you don't want to sleep with oil on your lashes, may apply the oils and wash off after 10 or 20 minutes for some benefit. According to WebIndia 123, women in India regularly gently massage both eyebrows and lashes with oil to encourage them to grow, and brush them every day.

Step 4

Give up the eyelash curler. Eyelash curlers may make your lashes look longer, but it's at the expense of the actual lashes, which fall out more heavily with lash curler use. Instead, when applying mascara, hold the wand at the tip of the eyelash for a count of three to see if that will help hold the lash in a curl.

Step 5

Consider using the prescription lash lengthener, Latisse. Latisse is the only FDA-approved medication to help grow lashes longer, thicker and darker. Apply Latisse to your lashes each evening before bed. You should see results in as few at eight weeks, but most people have seen improvement by 16 weeks. You must continue using the medication to continue to reap the benefits.

Tips and Warnings

  • The less makeup you wear, the happier your eyelashes will be. Don't wear mascara if you're just running to the store, and see how your eyelashes improve in length.
  • Latisse has some permanent side effects, such as skin darkening, that should be discussed with your health care provider before beginning the therapy.

Things You'll Need

  • Olive oil
  • Eye makeup remover
  • Latisse (optional)
