Herbs for Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that can affect the scalp, forehead or neck. Mild cases appear as fine, powdery silver scales, but more severe cases appear as thick, encrusted patches. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, about half of all people with psoriasis have scalp psoriasis. Psoriasis generally has multiple causes and can be triggered by psychological, environmental and biological stress. Herbal remedies for scalp psoriasis treat the underlying stresses that produce the scales and irritation.

Burdock Root

Burdock root (Arctium lappa) is an alternative herb and a key treatment for inflammatory, scaly skin disorders such as scalp psoriasis. Burdock root gently stimulates the digestive system and improves bile secretion. This aids in the removal of waste and toxins that may trigger bouts of scalp psoriasis. Burdock is also effective for rheumatic conditions often associated with scalp psoriasis.

Turmeric and Ginger

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is gaining popularity as a potent treatment for scalp psoriasis because of curcumin, one of its major constituents. A similar substance in ginger (Zingiber officinalis), called 6-gingerol, also shows promise for psoriasis. According to a study in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, both curcumin and 6-gingerol have the ability to regulate enzymes and molecules that cause inflammation, a major factor in chronic and autoimmune diseases such as scalp psoriasis.

Sarsaparilla

Sarsaparilla (Smilax regelii) is an alternative herb used specifically to relieve scaling and skin irritation of scalp psoriasis. As a diaphoretic, sarsaparilla helps the body eliminate toxins that may trigger scalp psoriasis by stimulating perspiration.

Figwort

A buildup of toxins in the colon may trigger bouts of scalp psoriasis. Figwort (Scrophularia nodosa) works by eliminating toxins through its internally cleansing actions as a mild laxative and diuretic. Do not take figwort if you have heart problems, as it is also a heart stimulant.

Oregon Grape

Skin disorders such as scalp psoriasis may be manifestations of poor metabolism or an excess of toxins in the body. Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium) treats scalp psoriasis mainly through its stimulating effect on the digestive system and its tonic effect on the liver. The liver produces bile and plays a major role in metabolizing carbs, proteins, fats and vitamins. It also detoxifies many of the wastes produced by the body's metabolic processes. By regulating metabolism and keeping the blood and body free of toxins, Oregon grape has a central role in treatments for scalp psoriasis.

Yellow Dock

Yellow dock (Rumex crispus) is known as a blood cleanser. It relieves the itching and scaly plaques of scalp psoriasis.

Valerian and Skullcap

Stress can trigger bouts of scalp psoriasis. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) and skullcap (Scutellaria laterifolia), either alone or in combination, are potent nervine herbs that can reduce tension and aid sleep.
