Simvastatin, sold as Zocor as a prescription medication, may be part of the treatment for high cholesterol levels. Simvastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitor, according to the Mayo Clinic, also may be used to treat heart conditions. Zocor generally is prescribed along with a change in diet to control cholesterol.
Rare Serious Side Effects
Simvastatin may cause serious problems for your eyesight. According to the Mayo Clinic, the three rare serious side effects of the drug are visual decreases, blurry vision and even blindness. These are rare but will require medical attention. Consult your physician immediately if you experience any of these severe side effects.
Other Serious Side Effects
There also are serious side effects from Zocor that occur more often in people who take it. While they are not common, they do affect some patients. Again, tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of these. They could include abnormal bodily weakness or pain throughout the body, joint swelling, bodily chills, abnormal tiredness, a cough, throat soreness and discoloration of the urine, particularly darkening. Others include sneezing, breathing difficulties, a runny nose, bodily motion problems, congestion in the ears or nose, pain or weakness in the muscles, a fever, a headache, pain in the joints or a loss of your voice. According to Drugs.com, other severe and serious side effects that require medical attention include problems with your memory, tingling in the feet or hands, skin blisters or peeling and skin or eye yellowing.
Temporary Side Effects
Simvastatin also may produce certain side effects that will not last past the initial stages of use. These temporary side effects only should be told to your doctor if you find them annoying or they do not go away. The rare temporary side effects include a rash on the skin that may be oozing, scaly and encrusted, a normal rash or itching on the skin. Other temporary effects may include an acidic stomach, flatulence, belching, nausea, diarrhea, bloating, a decrease in or loss of strength in your body, constipation or indigestion.
