Acne breakouts are characterized by pustules, papules, cysts, nodules and blackheads appearing on the skin. Even though these blemishes heal over time, they can often leave behind dry, tough, discolored scars that can take longer to be eliminated. Luckily, there are a few ways to diminish acne scars more quickly.
Olive Oil
Olive oil is highly emollient and can be used on your skin to loosen and soften dead and discolored scar tissue so that it can be removed more easily. According to the University of California, olive oil has been used to clean, soften and treat the skin for hundreds of years. Olive oil is a non-pore-clogging oil that can be used on your skin without causing more acne. To use olive oil as a skin softener, massage around 1 Tbsp. of the oil onto your skin, using deep, circular motions with your fingers. After three minutes, place a steaming hot washcloth over your face, which will further loosen dead skin. Press the washcloth onto your face to allow skin to be heated by the cloth. When the washcloth cools down, wipe off the oil. Repeat up to three times per week.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is a gentle yet effective exfoliant for removing dead and discolored skin that has been softened. According to Arm and Hammer, baking soda is highly alkaline, allowing it to slough away dead skin without the need to apply vigorous scrubbing. To use baking soda as a skin exfoliant, combine 1 Tbsp. of baking soda with 1 tsp. of water in a bowl, mixing them thoroughly. This will create a paste similar to toothpaste in consistency. Spread the baking soda paste onto your skin and gently massage it in using a light touch and circular finger movements. After one to two minutes, rinse off the baking soda mixture with water. Repeat up to three times per week.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is both highly acidic and high in vitamin C, both of which help remove dead, scarred skin cells and increase skin cell turnover. According to the University of Maryland, when the skin cells are turned over more frequently with vitamin C, the old skin cells are shed and new skin cells are developed at a faster rate. Using lemon juice as a natural skin toner after exfoliation promotes a more balanced complexion that is evenly toned, without damaging it with harsh chemicals. To apply lemon juice to your skin, fill an empty spray bottle with concentrated lemon juice and spray your skin liberally. Allow your skin to naturally dry, and repeat up to three times per day.
