How to Stop Rapid Hair Loss

Generally, your hair is constantly growing, falling out and re-growing. Each hair will normally grow around 1 cm a month during its growth phase, stop for a few months and then fall out so that a new hair can grow in its place. Over time, many men develop a very normal male pattern baldness where the hairline recedes and they lose the hair on top of their head. Women can develop also female pattern baldness which is characterized by thinning hair across the entire scalp. However, if your hair falls out rapidly something is wrong and you need to do the following:

Step 1

Change your regular diet to include a healthy diet a good balance of nutritious vegetables, fruits, protein, vitamins and minerals. Just as plants need nutrients to grow; your hair requires essential vitamins and minerals. Rapid hair loss can be a sign of anemia (lack of iron) or that essential vitamins are missing in your diet.

Step 2

Try supplements with B vitamins and vitamins A, C and E. Fish oil supplements are also recommended as they promote healthy hair growth.

Step 3

Consider the hairstyle such as hairstyles pulling hair and put undue stress on it. Changing from tight buns, pig tails or other stressful styles to a more gentle and accommodating haircut. The body changes as one ages and just because an individual has had a particular hairstyle or used a specific treatment for years doesn't mean it is still appropriate for their hair.

Step 4

Be aware that certain treatments (like hot oil or permanents) can also damage your follicles and cause scarring which will inhibit new hair growth.

Step 5

Do some research if you are currently taking prescription medicines. Some medications can cause hair loss and it is important to catch the side effects early to prevent any permanent damage to hair follicles.

Step 6

Evaluate your life and the level of stress you have been under such as stress at work, relationship problems, or loss of a loved one. Telogen effluvium is the medical term used to describe stress induced hair loss. Stress can cause your hair to enter the resting stage of growth and it will fall out in the shower or while brushing it. The good news is that this is often temporary, but you should find ways to reduce the level of stress in your life if you notice you are losing your hair rapidly.

Step 7

Call the doctor and make an appointment. The fact is that rapid hair loss is not normal and could suggest either side effects from medication are an underlying medical condition that needs treatment. If your hair is falling out rapidly, you need to meet with a doctor to discuss the situation.
