There also are home treatments you can use to treat age spots. Over-the-counter creams can be applied to the age spots to fade their appearance. The creams are designed to get rid of the extra pigment that is causing the spot. Active ingredients that might be found in these creams are glycolic acid, hydroquinone or kojic acid. Full results are not likely to take effect for several weeks, because the creams need to penetrate the surface of the skin.
Considerations
Doctors can prescribe a stronger concentration of hydroquinone to clear up age spots. A doctor also might prescribe a steroid while using the hydroquinone. Keep in mind that prolonged use of this drug has been related to skin irritation problems.
Warning
Make sure to speak with your insurance company before you undergo any type of treatment for age spots. Since age spots are not harmful and removal is a cosmetic choice, insurance probably will not cover the cost of these procedures.
