How to Organize Your Life

Desk drowning in papers? Cluttered closets? No room for the car in the garage? Feeling drained? Overloaded? If this sounds familiar, it's time to improve the quality of your life. Many of the things you need to do to make your life and surroundings more pleasant are simply changes in lifestyle. Make a resolution now to create more balance in these areas.

Focus on Yourself

Step 1

Make time for yourself. Relax and have fun. Give up activities that you just don't care about, or those that take up too much time, especially on weekends when you can spend more quality time with family and friends. Start a new hobby. Have you always wanted to play the piano? Take lessons. Remember, if you are happy, you have so much more of yourself to give.

Step 2

Clean your home. Organize a little each day. Get rid of clutter by breaking the task into small steps, starting with one room at a time. Decluttering should make everyone--yourself, family and friends--feel more comfortable in your home. According to the ancient Chinese practice of feng shui, your home "mirrors your inner self." For life to go well and for you to feel your best, it's important to have a good flow of "energy" circulating throughout your home.

Step 3

Ask your spouse or partner for help, and give your children chores. Not only will you accomplish things faster, but also you'll have more free time to enjoy and appreciate your family. If someone offers you help, don't turn her down.

Step 4

Set up a budget and don't over-spend. Dine out less. Meals away from home strain your budget. If you give yourself a treat occasionally, look for coupons. Scan your newspaper and check out mailers sent to your home. Also, limit the amount of trips you make to the grocery store for items you forgot. Having to make multiple trips will cost you more. Make a list of the things that you need, stay within a budget, and shop all at once.

Step 5

Make a "to do" list. Make sure you are working efficiently. Don't take on additional projects that you know you can't complete accurately by the deadline. If you want to concentrate better, clear your work area of everything that does not relate to the project you are working on. If you work from home and your kids are distracting you, consider giving them a project to work on. This will keep them occupied.
