3 Ways to Find a Walking Buddy

1. Find a Friend

Since walking is such an easy exercise and recognized as a superior workout, the numbers of people out walking are reaching new heights. Since it's so much easier to stay committed to a routine when you are accountable to another person, now is a good time to find a walking buddy. Watch while you're out on your regular walks. Look at who is there at the same time and on a regular basis. Identify one or two people whom you could approach and make eye contact. Start with a simple hello. If you get a response, then initiate a conversation the next time you see her. Walk beside your possible new friend and check out her stride. Gauge the pace and tempo of her walking pattern and if it seems to fit, ask her if she would like some company. Just as with any new friendship, you'll spend time getting to know your new walking buddy and make arrangements to meet in an agreeable place and time.

2. Join a Walking Club

Walking clubs are sprouting up everywhere. While you may not enjoy walking in groups as some clubs do, you can at least attend a few sessions with the group and begin to meet other people with similar interests. Even when you're walking with a group, you can always hook up with person and lag behind the others or step it up and lead the group. The point is to enjoy your walk with someone whose conversation you enjoy and who will help you to pass the time. You can look forward to walking with a buddy, instead of facing the ordeal alone, if indeed it is an ordeal to you. A buddy can liven up your experience and allow you to multi-task, since you can exercise and socialize at the same time.

3. Post an ad

Use a local website or social networking site to find a walking buddy. Post your desired dates, times and distances that you regularly walk. Describe yourself briefly, including age and fitness level, and perhaps share a little about your goals. For instance, you may be trying to lose weight and could use another dieter to join your efforts. If you are training for a walking race, make that known. Local senior centers, the gym or even a bulletin board at the grocery store are loaded with requests for buddies specific to a certain activity. Post your own ad and look for others who have advertised for a buddy. Keep trying different folks until you find one who works.
