Side Effects of Taking Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a compound found naturally in healthy cartilage. According to the Mayo Clinic, glucosamine has been shown in human research to help with the treatment of arthritis, particularly the knees. It is thought to work by decreasing inflammation and slowing the production of certain compounds that harm cartilage. Glucosamine is commonly offered in combination with chondroitin (a substance made from articular cartilage that promotes healthy joints) and is available over the counter.

Common Side Effects

Many side effects of glucosamine are typically well-tolerated and can include nausea, headache, difficulty sleeping, sensitivity to the sun and hardening of the nails, according to the Mayo Clinic. EMedTV reports that drowsiness is also a commonly reported side effect of glucosamine.

Some side effects are rare and serious, and may merit medical attention. These include increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and abnormal heartbeat.

Shellfish Allergies

Glucosamine can be made from the shells of crab, shrimp and other shellfish, so theoretically, if you have an allergy to shellfish, you could have a reaction to glucosamine. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is conflicting research about whether there is enough allergen in glucosamine products to cause a reaction. Nonetheless, exercise caution and consult your doctor if you have a shellfish allergy and want to take a glucosamine supplement.

Diabetes and Glucosamine

RxList.com notes that some preliminary research suggests a relationship between elevated blood sugar levels and glucosamine in people who are diabetic. Consult your doctor about taking glucosamine if you are diabetic, and monitor your blood sugar levels carefully.
