Treating acne can be a pain for anyone, but if you have ethnic skin, you have an extra challenge. While the causes of acne remain the same no matter what your skin color, sensitivity to certain products and the likelihood of scarring are increased in those with darker or black skin.
Mild Cleanser
Every good acne fighting program includes a mild cleanser. Brands that are especially effective for ethnic skin include Cetaphil and Neutrogena. Avoid products with benzoyl peroxide and test any cleanser with salicylic acid in a small area first to see if you are sensitive to it.
Natural Toner
After cleansing, use a toner to remove additional dirt, oil and dead skin cells from your pores. Unfortunately, many toners currently on the market contain alcohol, which is entirely too strong and irritating for ethnic skin. Try a formula that contains lemon juice or witch hazel instead like Thayer's Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner.
Oil-Free Moisturizer
Even if you have oily skin, a moisturizer is a must. Look for a product that is oil-free so as not to exacerbate your acne, but to provide your skin with the hydration it needs. Many times, acne treatments dry out the skin, leaving your blemishes dry and flaky. This just makes the condition look worse. With a good moisturizer, you can heal your acne without the flaky redness. A few good brands to try include Cetaphil, Neutrogena and Peter Thomas Roth.
Sunscreen
Even though it is usually more difficult for ethnic skin to burn, it is still important to wear an oil-free sunscreen of at least SPF 15 each day. Exposing yourself to too much sunlight while healing from acne can cause the red or brown marks blemishes leave behind to darken and to stay even longer. A few good choices include Coppertone Oil-Free, ULTA Sun and Proactiv Daily Protection Plus Sunscreen.
