In an effort to focus on saving money or use natural products, many women are making their own skin creams. Beauty and skin care doesn't have to be expensive, and a few ingredients can go a long way toward creating customized and effective skin creams and lotions at home. The possibilities for scents and ingredients are limitless, but a basic recipe for skin cream offers a starting point if you want to try making your own.
Step 1
Measure 1.5 oz of coconut oil on a kitchen scale. Place in a separate container or dish and then measure out about 0.5 oz of beeswax.
Step 2
Combine the beeswax and the coconut oil in a double boiler and melt the ingredients slowly, over low heat, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. It will take about 10 minutes to melt the ingredients. After ingredients are blended, remove from heat.
Step 3
Add 4 oz of purified water.
Step 4
Mix thoroughly using a handheld or counter-top mixer until the mixture is thick and creamy.
Step 5
Stir in about 30 drops of grapefruit seed extract into the beeswax, coconut oil and water mixture. Mix thoroughly.
Step 6
Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, if you wish, stirring in drops in by hand.
Step 7
Allow to cool for about five minutes.
Step 8
Using a spatula, transfer the cream into a glass jar with a screw-top and store in a cool, dry place.
Tips and Warnings
- Experiment with different oils, such as almond, peanut or sesame oil or wheat germ oil. Essential oils can include rosemary, lavender, sandalwood, jasmine and chamomile. You can find grapefruit seed extract at health or natural food stores. The cream lasts for up to four months, stored at room temperature.
