Elocon (mometasone) is a medication used to treat the inflammation and pruritis (itching) of such skin conditions as psoriasis and eczema. Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disorder characterized by silver plaques and red patches while eczema is a condition is characterized by dry skin and blisters. Elocon is available as a cream and as a liquid, and you place a thin film onto the affected area once a day or as your doctor prescribes.
Common Side Effects
Elocon typically causes acne, skin sores, changes in skin color, burning and itching of your skin, according to MedlinePlus. It can also cause dryness and irritation. Drugs.com indicates that Elocon may cause softening of your skin, spider veins and stretch marks. Apply cocoa butter lotion to your stretch marks daily as this should reduce its appearance. Typically, these symptoms should disappear in about three to four days of Elocon use. However, tell your physician if these symptoms persist and he can find another topical medication to treat your skin condition.
Serious Side Effects
In some instances, Elocon can affect you systemically (your body), especially if you cover the affected area with gauze or a band-aid. Doing this can increase the amount of medication that seeps into your skin. Cover the affected area only if your doctor instructs you to do so. Drugs.com says that it can cause changes in your mood, weight gain, muscle weakness and fatigue. It can also cause trouble sleeping, facial edema and blurry vision. Discontinue Elocon when you experience these symptoms and call your physician.
Additional Concerns
Avoid Elocon if you are allergic to mometasone. An allergic response to Elocon includes difficulty breathing, hives and swelling of your face, tongue, lips and throat. This is a medical emergency so call 911 immediately. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Elocon may harm your baby during pregnancy and when you nurse.
