Side Effects of Rhinocort Aqua

Rhinocort Aqua is a nasal spray that treats the symptoms associated with nasal allergies. The active ingredient in the nasal spray is budesonide and is a corticosteroid. This medication is available by prescription only. The typical dosage for Rhinocort Aqua is one spray to each nostril one or two times daily. According to RxList.com, children over the age of 6 and adults may use this nasal spray. Along with relieving nasal stuffiness and a runny nose, the medicine may cause unwanted side effects.

Common Side Effects

The most common side effect associated with using Rhinocort Aqua is a nosebleed. A person may also experience irritation of the nose, such as burning or sores. A dry mouth, a hoarse voice, inflammation of the throat with pain, nausea and coughing are also common adverse reactions. Some patients report a loss of smell. These side effects are common and will usually disappear with continued use of the medicine. If the adverse reactions do not go away or they get worse, the physician may decide to change the medication or decrease the dosage.

Serious Side Effects

Some adverse reactions to Rhinocort Aqua may cause serious harm to an individual. All of the following symptoms require medical attention. The formation of white patches on the throat, in the mouth or in the nose are possible and signify an infection. Women may develop irregular menstrual periods. Acne or other skin rashes may occur during the use of the nasal spray. Overuse of the steroid medication may cause symptoms of Cushing's syndrome, which include weight gain around the abdomen, a round face, fatigue and muscular weakness. An allergic reaction may occur when using Rhinocort Aqua. Signs of an allergy warrant immediate medical attention. These signs include swelling of the airway, face or lips, difficulty breathing, hives and an increased heart rate.

Infections

Because Rhinocort Aqua is a steroid, it may decrease the body's immune system. A decreased immune system may cause infections to occur in the body. Staying away from individuals with a known sickness is important when using this nasal spray. Frequently washing hands with soap and warm water also helps decrease the chance of catching an illness from others.
