Organic heat pads are among the most inexpensive and effective ways to experience the benefits of heat therapy. They work similarly to electric heating pads or hot water bottles and can be used on different parts of the body to relax tense muscles, decrease muscle spasms and relieve pain. Localized application of an organic heat pad helps improve circulation and decrease stiffness in joints and ligaments. This form of heat therapy is also effective for the relief of pain associated with menstrual cramps, arthritis and fibromyalgia. Organic heat pads are usually filled with rice, corn, wheat, flaxseed or buckwheat hulls and often contain aromatic herbs such as lavender. The pads are made with 100% cotton, flannel or fleece and are heated in a microwave oven. Organic heat pads can be made at home or purchased online.
Step 1
Spray the organic heat pad with a few squirts of water before heating. A moist heat pad is more beneficial than a dry one in most cases because the heat penetrates more deeply into the joints, muscles and tissues for greater pain relief. Another way to get moist heat is to wrap the dry pad in a warm, moist towel after you heat it in the microwave.
Step 2
Heat the pad in a microwave. The length and temperature of heating depend on the type of fabric and filler used in the pad. Most organic heat pads are heated for one to three minutes. Start out by heating for one minute on high. Continue to heat the pad for 30 seconds at a time until the bag is the right temperature for you.
Step 3
Apply the pad to the affected body part for no more than 20 to 30 minutes at a time. To avoid burning the skin, it is best to place the pad on top of a light layer of fabric rather than directly on the skin.
Step 4
Reapply for another 20 to 30 minutes after letting the muscles and tissues cool down for at least an hour to an hour and a half. It is safe and effective to apply the heating pad multiple times during the day.
Tips and Warnings
- Store your heat pad in a plastic bag in the freezer and also use as a cold pack as needed. Add an aromatic scent to the pad by putting a few drops of therapeutic essential oil on it after heating.
- Do not use a heat pad in the acute stage of an injury (the first 24-48 hours). Do not apply if a heat pad if you have an open wound or other skin condition. Do not use heat if muscles are bruised and swollen. Never use an analgesic rub or lotion along with a heat pad. Do not overheat a pad in the microwave; this may cause it to ignite and start a fire.
