Signs of Impotence

Impotence (erectile dysfunction, or ED) is a common condition that affects men of all ages, though it most commonly occurs in men over the age 75, according to the FamilyDoctor.org. The condition is characterized by an inability to maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity. Some factors, such as bad habits, emotional difficulties and disease, can trigger impotence. If you experience continued difficulty maintaining--or getting--an erection, a doctor can perform blood tests and a physical exam to determine the cause.

Emotional Signs

While occasional stress-related impotence is normal, repeated inability to maintain an erection or become erect may be caused by emotional factors that need to be resolved. Feelings of nervousness about sex and self-consciousness may inhibit your ability to maintain an erection. According to the FamilyDoctor.org, problems in your relationship can cause impotence. Improving the relationship may be all you need to correct your problem. Sex therapy may be beneficial, teaching you and your partner new ways to express affection, which can reduce anxiety about having an erection.

Bad Habits

A man's lifestyle plays an important role in sexual function, in some cases impeding his ability to become erect. Bad habits that may cause impotence include excessive use of alcohol, dugs and cigarettes, according to the FamilyDoctor.org. In addition, some prescription medications can cause impotence. Antidepressants, pain relievers and medications for high blood pressure may lead to impotence in some men.

Disease

Disease can trigger impotence in some men. According to the FamilyDoctor.org, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and diabetes may cause impotence. In addition, men who are unable to maintain healthy blood sugar or blood pressure levels may become impotent. Some types of surgery can also lead to impotence, as well as radiation therapy to the testicles, and brain or spinal cord injury.
