Painless Way to Remove Hair

If you want to remove unwanted hair, you have a variety of options: waxing, shaving, laser hair removal and even threading. All of these have some element of pain. Even the innocent-sounding shaving can leave you with nicks and cuts. The only truly pain-free way to remove hair is by using depilatories. They have come along way from the Nair commercials in the 1970s. The Food and Drug Administration recommends following the manufacturer's instructions for the best, painless results.

Step 1

Test the depilatory to ensure that it doesn't irritate your skin. Place a small amount on the back of your arm, wait the instructed time and wipe off before applying it to a larger area.

Step 2

Wash the area that you wish to remove hair from with soap and water, and then dry completely. Water may dilute the depilatory, and cause it to not work as effectively.

Step 3

Apply the cream to the area in a smooth, even layer with your fingers, making sure that all of the hair is completely covered. Be wary of getting the cream on your clothes, as it could stain them yellow.

Step 4

Wash your hands well after application. Check the instructions on the depilatory cream to see how long the instructions recommend you leave the cream on your skin. Set a timer and wait. Do not do any activities that would rub off the cream; sitting and reading a magazine in the bathroom is probably the best idea.

Step 5

Rinse the cream off when the timer goes off. Wipe a small test patch to ensure that the cream has worked. Then, use a washcloth to wipe away hair as you rinse. For especially stubborn hair, try using an old credit card to scrape the hair away.

Step 6

Refrain from using soap, shave gels, moisturizers or exfoliating creams on the area for at least six hours. These products may react with the cream and cause irritation.
