Breast enlargement is a type of breast augmentation that makes breasts appear bigger and fuller. If you are unsatisfied with your breast size, there are several options, some more effective than others, to enlarge your breasts. Surgical breast augmentation is the most expensive procedure, and will also yield more drastic results than prescription medications or natural breast enhancement supplements.
Saline Implants
As of 2010, saline breast implants can be surgically placed in individuals who are 18 and older, according to the Mayo Clinic. Saline implants consist of a silicone bag or pouch that is filled with a liquid saline, or salt water, solution during the surgical procedure. The amount of saline that is placed into the bag depends on how large the breast implants will be. The Mayo Clinic suggests that saline implants may not feel as realistic as silicone implants if they are filled too tightly. Like all breast implants, saline implants are not permanent and usually need to be replaced or removed within 10 years.
Silicone Implants
As of 2010, the FDA states that silicone implants can be placed in individuals who are 22 and older. Silicone implants have a higher age restriction than saline implants because breast tissue continues to grow until age 20, according to the Mayo Clinic. Additionally, silicone breast implants have different risks than saline implants because they are a thicker consistency that more closely mimics the feel and look of human fat. Like saline implants, silicone implants usually need to be replaced or removed 10 years after the procedure.
Prescription Medications
Prescription medications such as birth control pills, estrogen medications and some antidepressants create breast enlargement in some patients, according to Sandhya Pruthi, MD, an internist at the Mayo Clinic. Usually, these medications are not prescribed for breast enlargement, because the results are subtle. Instead, changes in breast size are often listed as a side effect of the medication.
Natural Breast Enlargement Supplements
Natural breast enlargement supplements are available over-the-counter and can be purchased online, over the phone and in health food stores or vitamin shops. According to Dr. Pruthi, most breast enlargement supplements contain phytoestrogens, a type of herb that can increase the risk of breast cancer. Additionally, drug interactions between breast enlargement supplements and prescription medications are possible, particularly medications that thin the blood, according to Dr. Pruthi.
