Sinusitis is the clinical term for a sinus infection. Many people experience sinusitis from time to time and most cases resolve without treatment. If you experience sinus problems that do not improve with over-the-counter medications or pain in the cheeks and yellow or green nasal drainage, it is time to see your doctor. He can provide an antibiotic which should make you feel better in just a couple of days.
Step 1
Visit your physician and discuss with him the symptoms that you have been experiencing. It is important to tell him how long you have been sick and what over-the-counter medications you have tried without resolve. This will help him decide which antibiotic is best for the treatment of your sinusitis.
Step 2
Have your prescription filled at the pharmacy of your choice. Be sure that you inform your pharmacist of any and all over-the-counter medications that you are taking, including herbal supplements, so she can monitor your treatment for possible drug interactions. She will be able to answer your questions regarding interactions and adverse side effects of the drug that you are prescribed for your sinusitis.
Step 3
Purchase a pill organizer to help you remember to take your antibiotics at the appropriate time. Fill the pill organizer with your antibiotics when you get home. Some antibiotics are prescribed once daily, while others are prescribed two to three times daily. When you are sick, it is easy to miss a dose or forget if you have taken it or not. A pill organizer will help you avoid missing doses or accidentally taking two doses.
Step 4
Take your antibiotic exactly as directed by your physician. Take it at the same time each day. It is beneficial to take your medication with a small meal to avoid stomach upset. If you are unable to eat a full meal, a few saltine crackers or milk will help prevent nausea and vomiting, which are common side effects of many antibiotics.
Step 5
If you miss a dose of your antibiotic, do not double up on your next dose as this can a medication overdose. Call your physician or pharmacist if you have questions regarding your dosing regime.
Step 6
If your condition is not improved within 3 to 5 days, you will need to contact or visit your physician. He may need to prescribe a different antibiotic to effectively treat your particular strain of sinusitis.
Tips and Warnings
- After taking your antibiotic, do not lay down for 30 minutes to help alleviate nausea or vomiting. This allows adequate time for the medication to be digested and prevents reflux.
- If you have taken more medication than was prescribed, or feel you may have overdosed, visit your local emergency room or contact 911 immediately.
