How to Tighten Your Skin After Weight Loss

When you initially gained weight, the elasticity of your skin was affected and it stretched in order to accommodate the extra weight. Unfortunately, once you lose weight, the skin does not stretch back. This can leave you with extra skin that gives your body a flabby appearance. Speak to your doctor while you are in the process of losing weight about ways to avoid this issue. For example, losing weight gradually can help keep skin tight.

Step 1

Moisturize the skin regularly. Improve your skin's elasticity by applying a moisturizing lotion on a daily basis. You should begin this process ideally before you start to lose weight. Drinking plenty of water, at least six to eight glasses a day, can keep your skin well hydrated.

Step 2

Keep up a low-fat diet that is high in protein. Protein can help you build muscle and tone up the areas that have loose skin. Consume lean protein sources such as egg whites, skinless chicken, turkey breast and beans. Eat plenty of vegetables, fruit and fat-free dairy items as well. Avoid fatty foods, like fast food, fried meals and sweets.

Step 3

Target the area that has the extra skin. Focus on strength-training exercises as a way to build muscle under the excess skin. You can use resistance exercise machines to target the area as well. Strength training should be done for 30-minute intervals at least three days a week to tone up. Make sure you rest the muscles for a day between workout sessions.

Step 4

Speak to a plastic surgeon. If you are unable to tighten the loose skin on your own, then you may wish to set up a consultation with a plastic surgeon. The excess skin may be surgically removed to tighten up the area. A tummy tuck, face-lift and butt lift are examples of a few surgeries performed to tighten the skin after losing weight.
