How to Use Almond Oil Skin Care

Sweet almond oil (Prunus amygdalus dulcis) can be used to cleanse or moisturize skin, as a massage oil or as a carrier oil when combined with essential oils for aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils, extracted from plants, flowers and herbs, diluted in carrier oils, such as almond oil, and applied to the skin for stress relief. Rich in vitamin E, minerals and protein, almond oil is appropriate for most skin types. You can buy it in health food stores or from online vendors.

Step 1

Dab almond oil on a cotton ball and apply sparingly to clean skin, to use it as a sunscreen. Use additional sunscreen if you burn easily. Sweet almond oil can reduce the photoaging effects of UVB sunlight, according to a study published in the March, 2007 issue "Journal of Clinical Dermatology." In the study, mice were treated with almond oil had less photoaging than those who were not treated.

Step 2

Pour 1 to 2 tbsp. of almond oil into your palm to use it as a makeup remover. Spread the oil evenly over your face and neck and then use a clean washcloth, dampened in warm water, to wipe away the makeup. Repeat until all makeup is removed. Use cotton balls to remove eye makeup.

Step 3

Add a few drops of essential oils, such as lavender, cypress or clary sage, to sweet almond oil. Dab on inner elbows, wrists, ankles or behind the ears to scent your skin. Store in a dark-colored glass container.

Step 4

Combine almond oil with olive, peanut or corn oil in a 1:1 ratio to create an emollient massage oil. Use sparingly for a therapeutic massage. Add essential oils, if desired.
