Microdermabrasion and chemical peels are popular treatments used to exfoliate the skin, revealing more younger-looking skin underneath. Although each helps to rid the face of dead skin cells, each differs via the delivery method used to reveal newer skin. Each also may be best indicated for use on a particular skin condition.
Process
The Smart Peel microdermabrasion system is an electronic unit that uses a microdermabrasion wand, featuring a vacuum-and-crystal combination that works to exfoliate the skin while stimulating circulation. In order to achieve exfoliation, a technician gently runs the wand over the entire face.
A chemical peel involves the application of chemicals (which are of varying strengths and makeup, depending on the desired effect) to the entire face. The chemicals are left for a specified period and then removed, revealing new skin underneath the outer skin layer.
Types
The Smart Peel microdermabrasion unit can be used for either a spa treatment, which tends to be milder, or for use by a physician or nurse for a more high-powered, deeper exfoliating procedure.
Although the same basic principles apply to most microdermabrasion machines, there are many varieties of chemical peels. Warnings
Although the Smart Peel microdermabrasion treatment isn't painful, it feels as if someone has gently applied fine sandpaper to the face. Revealing new skin underneath may make the skin appear temporarily red or feel sensitive to the touch. However, a person experiences no downtime or recovery period, and is able to return to work or school after the treatment (which typically doesn't last longer than an hour).
The side effects of a chemical peel typically depend upon the type of chemical peel delivered. A mild chemical peel may result in a slight burning sensation followed by red skin. However, a deep chemical peel can require several weeks of recovery as well as side effects such as peeling, cracking, redness and sore skin.
Considerations
When choosing between a smart peel microdermabrasion treatment or a chemical peel, it's important to evaluate your desired results. If you want to penetrate deep under your skin's layers, a chemical peel may be best. However, if you want to brighten the skin's appearance with a milder exfoliation method, microdermabrasion may be the best option for you.
Cost
The cost of a chemical peel often depends upon the type of peel used. Lighter peels (such as glycolic or lactic acid peels) typically cost in the $200 range or less; a deep peel may cost close to five figures because it requires a doctor's application and supervision. Microdermabrasion is priced much in the same way, depending upon the professional administering it. Costs may be upward of $300 for a physician-supervised treatment but half that cost or less for a spa or salon treatment.
