Prevnar Vaccine Side Effects

Prevnar is the brand name of an injection containing the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV). Drugs.com indicates that seven different types of pneumococcal bacterium are included in the vaccine. The vaccine is only used for children between 6 weeks and 10 years old. Exposure to a small amount of the bacterium can help children develop an immunity toward the diseases they cause. Examples of such diseases include pneumonia and meningitis. Prevnar has the risk of side effects, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate the risk is small compared to the severity of the diseases it protects against.

Common Side Effects

The most common side effects of the Prevnar vaccine are considered to be mild unless they are persistent or cause concern in caregivers of the children receiving it. Such effects, as reported by eMedTV.com, include irritability, drowsiness, fever, reduced appetite, diarrhea or vomiting. Drugs.com suggests a mild fever is in the range of 102 degrees F or less. eMedTV.com suggests the Prevnar vaccine is often given in conjunction with other routine immunizations, so side effects may not be attributed solely to one shot.

Other Mild Side Effects

Drugs.com suggests some children may have mild soreness, redness, swelling or a hard lump where the shot was administered. This should subside in a day or two. Some children and infants may be weak, tired or lethargic after the shot due to the exposure to the bacterium. Crying, fussiness, restless sleep or a mild skin rash are other mild side effects.

Serious Side Effects

Drugs.com suggests the likelihood of serious hazards is extremely low. However, an allergic reaction to the injection is possible. Symptoms of this include hives, trouble breathing or unusual swelling of the face and mouth areas. A fever of 103 degrees F or higher is an emergency situation. Children or infants who experience seizures, severe pain, itching, irritation or skin changes at the site of the injection should be seen by a doctor immediately. Other serious side effects include bruising easily or bleeding easily.
