People with darker skin tones can sometimes have difficulty finding skin care products that will cleanse and treat their skin, without causing unnecessary dryness or irritation. If products used on the skin contain harsh chemicals, it can lead to flaking or blotchiness on dark complexions. Fortunately, there are a few skin care products that will keep dark skin tones cleansed, exfoliated and free of blemishes.
Non-Comedogenic Oils
Non-comedogenic oils are those that have the ability to keep your skin clean without causing your pores to become clogged. These oils include olive oil, jojoba oil, castor oil and peanut oil. Oil can cleanse your skin and can be used as an alternative to soap, which can cause dark skin types to experience dryness and flaking. To use oil for cleansing purposes, massage 1 tsp. of a non-comedogenic oil onto your skin for 3 minutes, then drape a steaming washcloth over your face. The steam from the washcloth penetrates your pores, effectively releasing any blockages. When the cloth cools down completely, use it to wipe away the oil. Your skin can be cleansed with oil twice per day.
Natural Scrubs
Using a natural scrub sloughs away dead skin on darker complexions, keeping them free of flakes and impurities. Regularly applying a natural scrub can allow brown and black skin to maintain a smooth and supple appearance. Baking soda is a product that is gentle enough to be used on your skin once per day without irritation, but abrasive enough to remove dead and flaky skin. To use baking soda as a scrub, mix together 1 tbsp. of baking soda with 1 tsp. of water, massaging it into your skin for 1 to 2 minutes. After the allotted time has passed, rinse off your skin with warm water.
Natural Spot Treatments
If you have black or brown skin along with acne breakouts, it is often difficult to find an effective spot treatment products that will eliminate acne without making your skin blotchy and uneven. Using tea tree oil will clear acne breakouts without causing irritation or blotchiness, as benzoyl peroxide creams would. To use tea tree oil, dip a cotton swab into full strength tea tree oil, then dip it again into water to dilute it. Dilution will prevent the tea tree oil from causing redness on your skin. Apply the diluted tea tree oil to acne breakouts up to three times per day.
