Prepackaged diet food is not a new development in the diet industry. New diet companies and established diet companies alike are offering prepackaged diet food to dieters who want an easy way to lose weight without having to cook or count calories. The recipes and foods have evolved, and now diet companies offer an impressive array of diet foods that come frozen, ready for your oven or microwave, that you don't have to prep or plan.

Diet Plans

Many diet plans and companies offer prepackaged diet foods. Popular weight loss plans like Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem and BistroMD all offer diet food to help you lose weight and eat sensibly. Even grocery store companies like Lean Cuisine, Marie Calendars and Hot Pockets have marketed frozen prepackaged diet meals for those who don't want to sign up with a diet plan.

Food Choices

You can choose from a variety of foods with prepackaged diet menus. For instance, the Nutrisystem website lists 30 entrees and about 20 lunch, breakfast and snack options. Bistro-inspired meals, sweet treats and lighter fare can be found with most prepackaged diet food companies, which is especially beneficial for dieters who get bored easily.

Pricing

Unfortunately, embarking on a complete diet plan with prepackaged food can be expensive. Most meal delivery services charge from $250 to $400 per month, as of 2010. Some offer an a la carte menu, where you can pay for the meals individually. Grocery store meals can cost around $2.50 per meal.

Advantages

Dieters who don't like the constant calorie counting of regular diets will love the ease of prepackaged meals. Since they are delivered to your house, you only need to put them in the freezer and choose what you'd like at each mealtime. Those who have a tendency to overindulge at the dinner table may feel more satisfied when they eat their whole prepackaged meal. Dieters can also use the prepackaged meals to find what types of healthy foods they like and to learn more about eating healthy once the diet plan ends.

Disadvantages

Besides the fact that prepackaged diet food can be expensive, you may also find that eating frozen meals becomes tedious. You may be tempted to stray out of boredom or because the portion sizes seem too small. You may also have trouble when you decide to stop ordering the diet food. Because you haven't learned how to count calories and eat a healthier diet, it can be easier to lapse into your past bad habits. Noted diet site ThreeFatChicksOnaDiet.com also warns that prepackaged diet foods are often riddled with sodium and preservatives, so make sure to read the labels.
