Cymbalta Male Side Effects

Cymbalta is a prescription drug available as a delayed-release capsule. The manufacturer states that the drug, known generically as duloxetine hydrochloride, is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, fibromyalgia and the pain of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The manufacturer is currently (early 2010) attempting to get Cymbalta approved for use against chronic pain, and physicians may prescribe it off-label for that use. Young men taking Cymbalta (or other antidepressants) should be monitored for suicidal thoughts or actions, particularly during the first few weeks of use.

Neurological

Common neurological side effects of Cymbalta include fatigue, dizziness, headache, extreme sleepiness, difficulty sleeping and headache. Less common side effects include impulsiveness, agitation, abnormal dreams, restlessness, mood changes, behavior changes, vertigo, blurry vision, impaired taste, tremor, anxiety, flushing, irritability, hostility, memory loss, numb or tingling skin, confusion, loss of strength, rigid muscles, overactive reflexes, hallucination, unsteadiness, seizure, weakness, fainting, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, panic attack, aggression, hyperactivity, worsened depression, and thoughts of suicide or self-harm.

Gastrointestinal

Common gastrointestinal side effects include dry mouth, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting and constipation. Less common side effects include diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, gas, loose stools, black or bloody stools, clay-colored stools and loss of appetite.

Respiratory

Respiratory side effects are uncommon, and include yawning, cough and throat pain. According to Drugs.com, shallow breathing and stopped breathing can occur from taking this medication.

Skin-related

A common skin-related side effect is increased sweating. Less common side effects include itching, rash, nosebleed, yellowed skin, yellowing of the whites of the eyes, easy bleeding and easy bruising.

Urinary and Reproductive

Urinary side effects are uncommon, and include frequent voiding of small amounts of urine, dark urine, difficulty urinating and pain while urinating. According to prescribing information supplied by the manufacturer, males taking Cymbalta may experience sexual dysfunction, including difficulty reaching orgasm. Drugs.com reports that potential side effects include decreased sexual interest and impotence.

Other Side Effects

Other uncommon side effects include weight loss, weight gain, muscle cramps, muscle pain, joint pain, heart pounding, fever, chills, shaking, and inflammation of the nose or throat. Drugs.com states that an allergic or hypersensitive reaction can also occur with administration of Cymbalta, manifested by difficulty breathing, rash, hives, and swelling of the face, mouth, tongue and throat.
