Testosterone is a naturally occurring male hormone that is produced in the testes. Males produce testosterone for many of the same reasons that women produce estrogen, to allow the reproductive system to function properly. For individuals who have reduced levels of testosterone, synthetic forms are available. Decreases in these levels can occur because of aging, testicular problems or a variety of other illnesses
Effects on the Reproductive System
Testosterone boosts sex drive and performance. It also increases the production of sperm and aids in its mobility. Low levels of testosterone are known to decrease overall sexual function. Synthetic testosterone is available for those who have lower than normal levels of testosterone due to illness or aging.
Testosterone for Body Builders
Testosterone is used by weightlifters and body builders to develop muscle mass. Bone density is also increased with testosterone use. Because of the combined increase in muscle mass and bone density, muscle strength is also increased. Extended use is discouraged, but maintenance dosing of testosterone is used by many athletes to keep a desired amount of muscle mass.
Negative Side Effects of Testosterone
Negative side effects may result if too much testosterone is present. Changes in the size and shape of the testes and breasts, changes in urination (frequent or painful), tightness in the chest or unexplained swelling in various parts of the body are all negative side effects that should be reported to your physician.
Effects of Testosterone in Women
Some female athletes take testosterone to help with muscle production and increased strength. Overuse of testosterone in women can result in acne, menstrual abnormalities, deepening of the voice and, in some cases, the growth of facial hair.
