The Best Hair Products for Hair Thinning

Thinning hair can be a cause for embarrassment. But Paul M. Friedman, M.D., clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston notes that losing up to 100 strands of hair per day is completely normal, and is not something to worry about. Making sure that you use products meant for thinning hair can help keep your thin hair from breaking or falling out more than it should normally.

Shampoos

Thickening shampoos may seem like a trick of advertising, but shampoos that contain ingredients like rice or wheat proteins can temporarily thicken strands by providing them with extra bulk, says "Good Housekeeping" magazine. Using these daily in the shower won't give you thicker hair, but will make the single hair strands appear plumper, giving you the appearance of thicker hair when it is thinning.
Dry shampoo can be a lifesaver when you are dealing with hair thinning. Instead of washing your hair daily, and stripping it of any natural moisture, a dry shampoo is used without water, and helps add extra volume to thinning hair. It comes as a powder, and can be sprinkled liberally and combed through sparse strands. It gives thinning hair an extra layer to cling to and gives the illusion of thicker hair, all while allowing you to skip a day of washing.

Flexible Hairspray

You may want to use a stiff hairspray to keep every strand in place when you're dealing with hair thinning. But these alcohol-rich hairsprays can dry the hair out, causing it to crack and break. Instead, switch to a flexible holding hair spray if you have thinning hair. Flexible hairsprays are made with proteins that allow hair to move freely, causing it less stress and breakage.

Scalp Coloring

For those who have dark hair, the contrast between the dark color of the hair shaft and the brighter color of the scalp can be the most embarrassing part about hair thinning. A colored product goes directly on the scalp helps minimize the contrast between the dark hair and scalp, making the hair thinning look less noticeable. Dabbing the color on your scalp and then styling as usual will conceal the scalp.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil, the active ingredient in topical hair regrowth products, can be applied to the scalp in an effort to stop thinning hair, and even help to grow it back. Usually purchased in a liquid or foam form, the Mayo Clinic notes that it is most effective when the thinning hair occurs at the crown of the head. You may notice some itching or burning of the scalp as mild side effects, and the Mayo Clinic warns that it may take up to two weeks to see results.
Minoxidil is available over-the-counter in two and five percent solutions. Stronger doses require a doctor's prescription.

Wigs, Extensions and Hairpieces

If you are especially embarrassed because of your thinning hair, the addition of extensions placed on existing hair can give the appearance of thicker hair altogether. Extensions are appropriate for women, and are bonded or sewn into existing hair. They last for about three months, when they are removed and replaced.
Hairpieces are often used for men to cover bald patches or to simulate natural hair where it has become sparse. A toupee may offer extra confidence for a man who is self conscious about the thinning hair on the top of his head.
Either gender can use wigs to cover the head completely, disguising thinning hair completely.
