Snoring is the result of constricted airways. It can be caused by poor sleeping postures, or even anatomical abnormalities of the soft tissue in the throat. Whatever the reason, it can disrupt sleep patterns for both the person who snores as well as their partner. While there are no specific herbal remedies just for snoring, there are herbs that help open up the air passages and cleanse the sinuses, reducing the effects of snoring.
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus essential oil is one of the most common natural treatments for a variety of respiratory issues. It is a versatile herb that is considered both antiseptic and analgesic. Dr. Andrew Pritchard of Shrewsbury Hospital researched the effects of several essential oils, including eucalyptus, on snoring. He concluded that using a spray or gargle with certain essential oils helped to significantly reduce snoring in a double-blind study. Eucalyptus oil can be used with other essential oils, such as peppermint, lemon balm, sage and fennel by adding a few drops of each to water in a spray bottle. Spray two to three times in the back of the throat, swallowing between each spray.
Thyme
The herb thyme is a common cooking herb. It also has antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. According to Clayton College of Natural Health, it is used by herbalists for respiratory infections. It helps to kill the bacteria which cause infections. Thyme essential oil may also be used as a gargle for sore throats, laryngitis and tonsillitis. Other key uses include sinus infections, bronchitis and asthma. It helps remove mucus from sinus passages. Through its cleansing action, thyme can clear nasal passages and help facilitate better breathing. It can be taken in capsule form or by adding five or six drops of essential oil to a spray bottle. The essential oil may also be combined with the other oils listed above.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek is a natural decongestant. It is also antiseptic and helps to softens and dissolve hardened accumulated mucus. Some of the key uses of fenugreek listed in the Herb Guide are; loosen bronchial catarrh, treat lung infections, alleviate excess mucus, relieve sinus congestion and irritation. By clearing the nasal passages of mucus build-up and relieving overall congestion, fenugreek can alleviate some of the underlying causes of snoring. Capsules may be taken along with eucalyptus or thyme essential oil sprays.
Valerian
Valerian is a tall flower that grows throughout Europe and Asia. The root of the flower is used by herbalists to treat insomnia and anxiety. It has hypotensive and tranquilizing effects. It acts as a mild sedative and also helps lower blood pressure. It can be used to help treat a variety of sleep disorders related to stress and anxiety. It can be used with other herbs such as fenugreek and thyme to help relax the muscles and open airways. Valerian should not be taken with alcohol or other sleep medications, as it can enhance intoxicating effects.
