What Systems Are Affected by Salmonella?

Salmonella is a bacterium found in water, poultry, meat and eggs that are contaminated with feces. In addition, restaurant employees who do not wash their hands after using the restroom can contaminate your food with salmonella. You can become ill by ingesting these contaminated substances. According to the Mayo Clinic, you are at high risk for salmonella infection if you frequently travel to other countries, own a pet bird or reptile, have chronic stomach disorders or immune problems. You should be aware of the systems affected by this bacterium if you think you have a salmonella infection.

Gastrointestinal Tract

The gastrointestinal tract is the most common system affected by salmonella after eating contaminated food. According to the Mayo Clinic, it may take a few hours to a few days for symptoms to occur. Look for nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea and blood in your stool. Severe diarrhea can cause dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities. These metabolic disturbances may cause you to be hospitalized for IV hydration and electrolyte replenishment. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.

Nervous System

According to the Mayo Clinic, salmonella can affect your nervous system. Infection with this bacterium can cause a fever (body temperature greater than 100.5 degrees F) and mental confusion. The cause of these nervous system signs is most likely due to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances as a result of fever and diarrhea. Thus, it is important to drink plenty of fluids to maintain adequate hydration. Consult your doctor if you experience these nervous system symptoms.

Cardiovascular System

Salmonella can also affect your cardiovascular system, according to the Mayo Clinic. This bacterium may cause a slowing of your heartbeat that can result in headache, dizziness or fainting. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these cardiovascular symptoms.
