Whether you're babysitting, a new parent or a mother of five, your 11-month-old baby's teeth must be brushed twice a day, even if the teeth aren't entirely exposed from the gums yet. A baby's teeth are primary teeth, which means that the baby teeth will fall out to make room for permanent teeth. This does not mean, however, that baby teeth should not be brushed and treated with as much care as permanent teeth.

Step 1

Choose a baby toothbrush with extra-soft bristles and a small brush head. You can purchase baby toothbrushes at the drugstore or grocery store. Avoid adult toothbrushes or children's toothbrushes with medium or hard bristles.

Step 2

Brush your baby's teeth without toothpaste until your child is 2 years old. If you can't stand the idea of not using toothpaste on your 11-month-old's teeth, use a fluoride-free children's toothpaste that can be safely swallowed.

Step 3

Massage your baby's teeth with the toothbrush in gentle, circular motions, paying specific attention to the front, back and sides of each tooth. Wipe the gums with a moist paper towel where teeth have not yet grown in.

Step 4

Give your child a drink of water to rinse his mouth. It's OK if he swallows the water.

Step 5

Brush your baby's teeth every morning after breakfast and every night before bed.
