Contraceptive options include birth control pills, hormone shots and intrauterine devices. Mirena is an intrauterine device that releases low doses of hormones into your bloodstream. Though it's effective, a number of side effects are associated with it.

Common Side Effects

Mirena causes certain side effects that are common and can be expected. After a short time, your body should adjust to the release of hormones and these side effects should end. At first, however, you may suffer from stomach pain, headaches, back pain and nausea. Your sex drive may decrease as well, and you may begin to notice a vaginal discharge that appears to be milky. Breast pain and yeast infections are also to be expected.

Effects on Your Menstrual Cycle

After insertion of Mirena, you may notice a change in your menstrual cycle. For some women, cycles end completely. For others, periods become lighter and have shorter durations. In other cases, periods are irregular for three to six months before becoming regular again. Whatever situation, report any change to your doctor. Although the incidence of pregnancy with Mirena is rare, it is possible. Changes in your cycle can be indicative of pregnancy. If this is the case, Mirena must be removed immediately.

Risk of Ectopic Pregnancy

According to Drugs.com, half of those who become pregnant while using Mirena suffer from an ectopic pregnancy. Those at greatest risk are women with a prior history of ectopic pregnancies. Signs include severe abdominal pain and unusual vaginal bleeding. If these symptoms occur, contact your doctor immediately.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease is directly linked with the use Mirena. Your risk is at its highest when the IUD is initially inserted or shortly thereafter, generally within 20 days. Signs of this condition include heavy vaginal bleeding over a long period, lower abdominal pain, fever and chills. Painful intercourse and vaginal discharge are typical symptoms as well.

Additional Health Risks

Mirena is responsible for some other very serious side effects that should be brought to the attention of your doctor immediately. These include severe pain hours after Mirena has been placed, a sign of infection; depression; severe headaches or migraines and a yellowing of the eyes and skin.
