How to Tell If He Is Lying to You

How to Tell If He Is Lying to You

If you suspect your husband or boyfriend may not be telling you the entire truth, you don't have to take him for his word. There's plenty of body language to read, and much of it is subconscious reactions that he won't know enough to hide, even though they can be red flags to you. When you're concerned you're being lied to, don't get confrontational--get observant.

Step 1

Watch your man's overall body actions and reactions when you ask him straight questions about whether he is lying to you or not. Don't get angry or confrontational, but be stern and don't let him think the answer can be avoided. You should observe two things initially: whether he gets fidgety and nervous, and whether he begins to sweat.

Step 2

Consider the tone of his voice when he answers your questions. A man who is lying is often quicker to get angry and defensive, rather than calmly answering your questions and trying to put you at ease. This isn't a comprehensive giveaway because many men are composed enough--and smart enough--to know that keeping calm is key to not giving yourself away, but if you get a hostile answer, you've got some evidence that your suspicions were correct.

Step 3

Ask questions. Put the pressure on him to answer these questions. Mix things up by asking questions out of order. Many times, liars are very good at assembling a reasonable alibi in chronological order, but when they have to revisit aspects of their story out of order, they can make mistakes that will damage their story's credibility. You should also dig deep and try to get specific details whenever possible--many lies are constructed vaguely, and if you push for details, you'll catch him having to make things up on the spot.

Step 4

Watch for eye contact. A liar often struggles to maintain eye contact. This can be a particularly telling sign if your man typically maintains eye contact.

Step 5

Revisit the situation and ask your questions again in a few days. Remember some of the specific questions you asked to get details and repeat them. If you get different answers, there's a good chance your man made it all up.
