Negative Effects of Acai Berry Pills

Acai berries are considered a "superfood" because they are very nutrient dense, containing healthy antioxidants, amino acids, essential fatty acids and fiber. In fact, acai is one of the most potent antioxidant fruits on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) scale. Many people claim acai helps to increase energy, flush out toxins, lose weight and even improve sex life. Like other fruits, acai does not have many side effects. However, users may experience allergic reactions, adverse detoxification effects and/or additive effects with certain medications.

Allergies

A rare and minor side affect associated with acai is allergic reaction to pollen. Some acai users have reported aggravation of allergy symptoms. If you are severely allergic to pollen, start acai slowly, using a small amount to gauge your tolerance. Symptoms are generally mild, but consult with your doctor if an allergic reaction persists.

Healing Crisis

Detoxifying the body can have side effects. Acai's potent antioxidants help to purge toxins, which can be stored in various places in the body. Elimination of toxins can cause what some refer to as a "healing crisis": the process of eliminating toxins can cause side effects similar to those of ingesting the toxin itself. Life Extension Specialist Paul C. Bragg says detoxifying can cause temporary headaches, fatigue, body aches and/or gastrointestinal discomfort. If symptoms persist, consult with your doctor.

Drug Additive Effects

The essential fatty acids and antioxidants in acai are potent, natural anti-inflammatory compounds. COX-1 and COX-2 are enzyme factors in the body that can cause inflammation. According to AARP, those using COX-inhibiting or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen should consult with their doctor before taking acai to prevent a duplication of the COX-inhibiting effect, which could lead to adverse reactions such as increased risk of bleeding and blood-clotting problems.
