How Long Do Massage Stones Retain Heat?

Types of Stones

Stones used for a hot stone massage come in many different sizes and styles. Though it's possible to go out into the yard and choose stones that are dark and smooth to use for massages, the type of stone you choose is the best indicator of how long it will retain heat. Stones made from basalt, a type of volcanic rock, retain heat the longest; look for larger, dark-colored ones. Large stones made of dark grey or black basalt stone can be expected to retain heat for 45 minutes.

Method

Heating stones properly, and using them correctly, gives massage stones optimum heat retention. Stones that are heated to between 120 F and 150 degrees F in water hold heat longer while being easy to handle. When placing the stones, make sure to enclose them in a towel to help them retain the heat. Smaller stones may have to be reheated or rotated during the session; they won't hold their heat as long. Heating the stones longer doesn't add to their ability to retain heat, and you won't be able to use them against the client's skin until they have cooled anyway.

Indications

It's important to keep stones hot throughout the massage. The heat helps blood to flow. According to Nature's Stone's website, the application of heat increases blood flow and helps decrease pain and muscle spasms. Stones can be placed at points throughout the body to bring heat and relief to various energy channels, or to reduce pain.
