Side Effects of Rozerem Medication

Ramelteon is the generic medical name for Rozerem, a medication used in the treatment of insomnia or the inability to sleep. It's a CNS or central nervous system depressant that essentially helps your nervous system to slow down. Rozerem is a prescription-only medication that may help you fall asleep and sleep throughout a night without continual waking. According to the Mayo Clinic, it should not be used for extended periods, but for a day or two or a week or two. It may be prescribed for you to take as needed.

Non-Serious Side Effects

According to Drugs.com, there are several possible non-serious side effects of Rozerem. These generally are not serious unless they don't disappear with continued use of the medication. These types of side effects include nausea, diarrhea, bodily fatigue, dizziness and drowsiness past the point that it should cause this effect. Many other potential temporary side effects are associated with ingesting ramelteon. According to the Mayo Clinic, these are classified as less common. Consult your doctor if they persist. They include changes in the way food tastes, throat soreness, chills, sneezing, cough, insomnia, breathing difficulties, shivering, bodily motion difficulties, appetite loss, discouragement, joint swelling and congestion in the ears. Others include feelings of emptiness or sadness, vomiting, decreased interest in things you like, concentration difficulties, loss or decreases in the way things taste, a loss of voice, sweating, muscle cramps or pain, nasal congestion, irritability or a fever.

Serious Side Effects

Some potentially serious side effects require immediate emergency medical treatment. They include, according to Drugs.com: disruption of menstruation, lowered libido, swallowing difficulties, hallucinations, headache, arrhythmia or an irregular heart rate, production of breast milk that is unexplained, and changes of vision. Others include memory difficulties, suicidal behavior or thoughts, unusual thoughts, agitation, fertility problems, mood changes, depression and a pounding heartbeat or palpitations.

Allergic Reactions

Allergic reactions can produce such symptoms as abnormal hoarseness, tongue swelling, chest tightness, a rash, facial swelling, throat swelling, hives, leg swelling, swelling around the eyes or lips, breathing difficulties and itching. Seek emergency medical aid if you get any of these.
