The Best Products for Acne While Pregnant

Acne can happen at any time in your life, but it most often occurs during periods of hormonal fluctuation, such as puberty, menstruation or pregnancy. For pregnant women, it can be difficult to know what products to use. Most acne-fighting creams and lotions contain harsh chemicals that many pregnant women do not wish to apply to their skin while carrying a child. Luckily, there are natural products that will clear your skin without exposing you or your unborn child to chemical ingredients.

Soap for Sensitive Skin

Most commercial soaps contain strong chemical ingredients that can cause irritation and inflammation. Instead of using a standard facial soap, use a soap or a cleanser formulated for sensitive skin types, which will be free of skin irritants and additives. A soap designed for sensitive skin types will usually state on the label that it does not contain harsh ingredients, such as perfumes and dyes. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing your skin when washing. Simply lather your face, then rinse your skin well with water. Repeat twice per day.

Calamine Lotion

Calamine lotion is a natural, mineral-based lotion that is effective in drying up acne lesions and pustules on your body and face. Typically used to treat rashes or poison ivy, calamine lotion is also highly in spot-treating acne blemishes without exposing you to harsh chemicals. To apply calamine lotion to acne breakouts, shake the bottle well, then soak a cotton swab in the lotion. Dab the calamine lotion onto the individual breakouts, allowing it to dry on your skin. Leave the lotion on your skin for at least 1 hour before rinsing it off. Repeat up to three times per day.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide on your skin, but without the negative side effects, such as irritation, redness and burning. Tea tree oil is both antimicrobial and antibacterial and acts by killing acne-causing bacteria on your skin. Using tea tree oil instead of benzoyl peroxide also prevents you and your unborn child from exposure to the strong chemicals in benzoyl peroxide creams. Dip a cotton swab into full-strength tea tree oil, then dip it again into water. Apply the diluted oil to your skin, focusing on the areas with acne breakouts. Repeat up to three times per day.
