Birthday Ideas for Twins

Twins are born at the same time but may not develop similar interests. Clinical psychologist Dr. Joan A. Friedman suggests in her 2008 book, "Emotionally Healthy Twins: A New Philosophy for Parenting Two Unique Children," that "...parents and others need to treat twins as two separate children who happen to have been born at the same time." Buying gifts for twins involves a thoughtful selection of unique items that are comparable in size, price and use.

Books

Books provide a long-lasting gift that may be used again and again. Selecting a special book allows the gift-giver a wide variety of options while essentially selecting the same general gift. The titles appeal specifically to the twins as individuals, rather than a stereotypical matching twin gift. The major online book vendors offer wish list registration services. Encourage the twins to visit several websites to create a wish list well in advance of the birthday.

Color-Coded Gifts

If selecting matching items such as electronic gifts or jewelry is not an option, select gifts of comparable value or cost in each twin's favorite color. Computers and cell phones are offered with variously colored jackets or cases. The color difference makes each gift sufficiently individualized, while also allowing the item to be easily identified as belonging to the twin.

Individual Time

A voucher for each twin for a trip to a place of his choice allows each to select a private birthday excursion. This time apart from the other twin creates a sense of an individual gift. Be open to possibilities for unusual trips. The idea of a voucher might suggest some possibilities such as a trip to the mall, museum or concert for younger twins. Older twins might enjoy a visit to a cosmetic store or a day spa.

Place in History

An unusual gift for twins involves permission from the duo for registration in a research project. The Twin Research Project is a national registry of research programs involving twins. The university and laboratory projects vary in scope and sequence, but all contribute to understanding the relationship between the twins themselves and the outside world. The University of Southern California Twin Project is just one of the university projects that study health and psychological issues facing the pairs.

Scrapbooks

A gift of scrapbooks and sets of scrapbooking supplies allows each twin an opportunity to express individual differences while giving two presents of comparable value. Colorful papers, a scrapbook that suits the personality of each twin and basic construction supplies, including color-coded scissors, tape, mounting corners and glue, make a nice gift package. If money is not an option, an inexpensive digital camera added to each craft gift basket provides additional material for the scrapbook. A larger gift basket might also include a shared printer and a package of photo paper for each twin.
