Chemical peels improve the appearance of the skin, removing surface wrinkles and imperfections without the cost or pain associated with face-lift procedures. The Obagi Blue Peel is one of several types of chemical peels available. The peel takes its name from the blue tint that temporarily remains on the skin for a short time after the procedure.
Identification
Chemical peels remove the top layer of skin, revealing smoother, less wrinkled skin. The Obagi Blue Peel system uses trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to remove surface skin layers. TCA peels are most commonly used for medium-depth peels, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In the Obaji system, TCA is mixed with a blue base that produces the characteristic blue tint of the peel.
Uses
TCA peels are helpful in removing fine wrinkles, but may not be as effective in removing deep or rough wrinkles. The Obagi Blue Peel may also be helpful in removing patches of dry or dark skin, sun-damaged areas, freckles and other skin imperfections.
Procedure
Obagi Blue Peels are performed in a dermatologist's or plastic surgeon's office. Before the procedure, your face will be thoroughly cleaned. The peel is then applied to your skin in a thin coat. If the doctor decides deeper penetration is needed, he may apply additional coats. The blue color of the peel allows the doctor to easily judge its depth and strength. You may feel a warmth or stinging sensation when the peel is first applied.
Recovery
After the procedure, you will notice a slight blue tint to your face, which will remain for approximately 12 to 24 hours. Your face may be swollen immediately after the procedure. Throbbing or tingling can be reduced through use of prescription or nonprescription pain relievers. Approximately two to three days after the procedure, skin will begin to peel from your face. The peeling will last for several days, and healing should be complete in 7 to 10 days, according Obagi Medical. Your doctor may recommend wearing sunscreen after your peel to prevent damage to the new skin. The appearance of your skin will continue to improve in the four to six weeks following the procedure.
Warning
Chemical peels, including the Obagi Blue Peel, cannot offer the same results as face-lifts. Peels can remove only surface wrinkles and can't repair sagging facial muscles that cause deeper wrinkles. There is a low chance of scarring after chemical peel treatment, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, although any scarring that occurs can usually be successfully treated.
