A punching bag, also known as a speed bag, is an essential tool for boxers and all martial arts fighters. It can also be a useful tool for those who want a demanding cardiovascular workout. Hitting a punching bag requires hand-eye coordination, rhythmic punching and consistent movement. Mounting a punching bag to a wall is a rather straightforward task, and you should be able to start hitting your bag after about an hour of installation time
Step 1
Determine the spot in your home or garage where you will install the bag. You do not want a high-traffic area because you will want to concentrate on your activity and not be disturbed by family members and friends. The basement is usually a good choice.
Step 2
Put up the brackets that will hold your punching bag. You will want to install the 16-oz. bag at head height in order to practice punching. The brackets that hold your punching bag should have two holes on the right side and two holes on the left side. Trace these holes on the two wood blocks that you will use as a base for the brackets. Then take a 1/4-inch drill bit and drill holes in the wood blocks.
Step 3
Hold up the wood blocks at the height you want to install them on the wall. Take a hole punch and push it through the holes in the wood blocks so that they make impressions in the wall. After you have made the impressions, drill guide holes in the wall for the wood screws. Most home-use punching bags are installed on the wall because a ceiling mount will leave the bag at a height that is not consistent with effective training. Instead of delivering the punches at head level, they would be launched at an upward angle that is not appropriate.
Step 4
Install the bracket for the punching bag. Take the screws and push them through the bracket and into the wood base. Now take your screwdriver and secure the screws through the wood and into the wall. If you cannot get the screws into the wall, take a drill bit and drill pilot holes. After the bracket is securely attached, use a level to make sure the bracket is even.
Step 5
Connect the small loop on top of the punching bag to the S-ring hardware that came with the bag. Then take the S-ring and connect it to the swivel in the center of the hardware. The swivel is part of the bracket and does not have to be installed. Your bag is now ready and you can start your workout.
