Cellulite is a common term for fat deposits that have a wrinkled or cottage-cheese like texture on the skin. These fat deposits push up against the connective tissues under the skin and are clearly noticeable when you bend down. Cellulite commonly appears on the arms, thighs, buttocks and stomach. The most common factors contributing to cellulite include age, genetics, diet and the amount of body fat present. Cellulite is not a medical abnormality, but it can be unattractive. You can diminish cellulite by following a healthy diet and keeping up with a regular exercise regimen.
Step 1
Avoid eating foods that are high in starches and carbohydrates, such as white rice, white bread and pastas made with enriched flour. Foods rich in starches and carbohydrates are converted into fat during the process of digestion. This can quicken the development of cellulite in the arms, buttocks, thighs and stomach. Instead, consume more whole grain breads, baked goods made of wheat, and beans, which are healthier for the body and helpful in diminishing cellulite.
Step 2
Consume foods that are rich in antioxidants to help lessen and/or prevent cellulite. Antioxidants help strengthen your skin's connective tissues. Weak connective tissue allows fat cells to penetrate into the outer layer of skin, causing the appearance of cellulite. Foods rich in antioxidants include all brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as oranges, grapefruit, mangoes, spinach, berries, carrots and tomatoes. Eat two to three servings of these types of foods daily to help diminish the accumulated fatty deposits in your body.
Step 3
Drink one to two liters of clean water on a daily basis to help lessen the fat deposits that form cellulite. Your kidneys will not perform correctly when your body does not get enough water. When the kidneys cannot function properly, some of their workload is passed on to the liver. Your liver is the main organ for metabolizing stored fat into energy that can be used by your body. When your liver performs some of your kidney's duties, it cannot work at full capacity. This causes your liver to metabolize less fat, causing more fat to remain stored in your body, and cellulite can form. Drinking enough water will ensure that your kidneys function properly.
Step 4
Consume foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids to help reduce cellulite, lower cholesterol and lose extra weight. Omega-3 fatty acids can lessen cellulite by keeping your connective tissues and cells properly hydrated. Healthy foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include olive oil, macadamias, pecans and flax seeds. Eat at least 1 to 2 ounces of these types of foods every day to help reduce cellulite.
Step 5
Do a combination of cardiovascular exercises, strength training and yoga for at least one hour daily together with maintaining a healthy diet. Yoga poses such as the shoulder stance can help improve lymph flow, which can reduce the appearance of cellulite. Do talk to your physician before embarking on any kind of exercise program.
