How to Reduce Cellulite at Home

Almost 90 percent of women will develop cellulite at some point in their lives, typically on their thighs, buttocks, or stomach. It develops when pockets of fat get trapped under the skin, and cause a dimpled appearance. Having cellulite isn't synonymous with being overweight; however hormonal changes, genetics and age are all big factors in its development. So while many of the factors can't be controlled, there are some steps you can take to prevent or reduce cellulite at home.

Reducing Cellulite

Step 1

Start a regular daily exercise program that targets your thighs and buttocks; this is the most effective way to reduce cellulite. Running, speed walking, climbing stairs, cycling, and yoga all help burn the excess fat cells that cause cellulite to develop in the first place.

Step 2

Eat foods high in fiber and low in fat for a great step to stop fat build-up and fight existing cellulite. Eating lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains is the best way to achieve this. Also make sure to drink plenty of water.

Step 3

Massage the cellulite out. Rubbing lotion into the cellulite areas nightly can help increase circulation and break up the fat cells. It's important to keep this up, though, because it can take several weeks before results begin to show.

Step 4

Wear pantyhose. Wearing pantyhose presses against the fat and helps improve circulation, breaking up and spreading out the fat cells, which reduces the "dimpled" look. Some companies even make pantyhose designed to reduce cellulite.

Tips and Warnings

  • Remember that reducing cellulite won't happen overnight; make sure to schedule time in every day to focus on it. Try to schedule meals and snacks ahead of time to make sure you're eating the best balance of fibers and fats. Change your workouts frequently. Challenging your muscles with different exercises and intensities will help you burn fat faster.
  • Don't believe the claims that many creams make about curing or reducing cellulite; there is no cream that can change the make-up of your fat cells.
