Efudex is a topical cream that treats actinic or solar keratoses, which are skin growths caused by too much exposure to the sun. Treating the skin growths is important, because they can lead to skin cancer. According to MedlinePlus, the medication also treats skin cancer on the face by destroying the abnormal cells. It is available by prescription only and treatment lasts, on average, two weeks to a month. Along with the desired effects of this medicine, there may be unwanted adverse reactions.
Common Side Effects
The most common side effects associated with taking Efudex include irritation at the site of application. Burning, swelling, redness, irritation, itching, pain or crusting of the skin may occur. The medication may also cause the skin to darken, ooze or form a rash. These adverse reactions are usually temporary and will stop with continued use of the medication. If the side effects become bothersome or continue without improvement, report them to your physician.
Serious Side Effects
Some side effects associated with taking this medication, although less common, are more serious and need to be reported to your doctor for further evaluation. According to MedlinePlus, some serious side effects include symptoms of gastrointestinal distress, such as bloody diarrhea, vomiting, sharp stomach pains, fever and chills. The medication also may cause a severe red rash on the skin.
Precautions
Using Efudex may cause sensitivity to the sun. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher while using the medication. Wearing clothing to cover up and staying out of direct sunshine during the middle of the day is also important. According to the Mayo Clinic, users of Efudex should not use tanning beds.
