Augmentin is one of the brand names associated with a combination of the generic drugs clavulanate and amoxicillin. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic of the penicillin class, while clavulanate is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. The combination medication is used in the treatment of bacterial infections. Augmentin is available as a pill by prescription only.
Gastrointestinal Side Effects
The most common side effects of Augmentin in the gastrointestinal system, according to Drugs.com, are vomiting and its attendant nausea, along with diarrhea. You may experience any one of these side effects, a combination of them or none at all. If you do get any of them, you need not contact your doctor unless they continue or are a problem for you. They should go away as you continue your Augmentin treatment.
Skin Side Effects
Augmentin may cause some serious side effects that the Mayo Clinic lists as "less common." Tell your doctor immediately about any of these. Augmentin may induce a rash on the skin, welts, hives, skin redness and itching. These may be indicative of an allergic reaction.
Sexual Side Effects
There are several known sexual side effects of the clavulanate and amoxicillin combination drug. These, too, are reported by the Mayo Clinic as "less common." These also require a physician's attention. They include genital or vaginal itching, a discharge from the vagina that is white and thick that may have a mild odor or no smell at all, and physical pain when engaging in sexual intercourse.
Overdose Side Effects
For adults, the common dose of Augmentin may be between 250 mg and 500 mg at eight-hour intervals or 500 mg to 875 mg at 12-hour intervals. For children, doses can range from 20 mg to 40 mg and is calculated according to body weight. In other words, a child may receive 20 or 40 mg of Augmentin per kilogram (approximately 2.2 pounds) of weight, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you take too much of the medication, you may experience side effects of an overdose. These may include foot or leg swelling, pain in the stomach, drowsiness, urine that is cloudy or contains blood, urination that is painful or causes a burning sensation, a fever or reduction in the need to urinate and the amount of output from urinating. Seek emergency medical aid for any of these.
