Vicodin is a combination of acetaminophen and hydrocodone, and is considered a narcotic pain reliever. Hydrocodone is the stronger of the two ingredients, as the acetaminophen is used primarily to increase its strength. Available by prescription only, Vicodin is a powerful pain reliever used to treat moderate to severe pain. It's also accompanied by powerful side effects, including addiction.
Common Side Effects
Some of the most common side effects of Vicodin are its most mild and least severe. These pose the least risk to your health and should only be reported if they persist: drowsiness, vomiting, dizziness, nausea and constipation. You may also feel light-headed at times.
Serious Side Effects
Certain side effects of Vicodin warrant a call to your doctor due to their serious nature. If left untreated, these side effects can result in severe health repercussions. They include but are not limited to confusion, severe constipation, a slow heart rate (also known as bradycardia) and low blood pressure. You may also suffer from anxiety or fear, slow or irregular breathing and severe drowsiness.
Physical Dependence
It's possible to become physically dependent on Vicodin and not actually be abusing it. According to eMedTV.com, because Vicodin is a narcotic, it causes physical changes that your body automatically adjusts itself to. Over time, this results in a tolerance at a specific dosage and you find yourself needing more to relieve your pain. If you notice this happening with you--even if the condition for which you were originally prescribed Vicodin has improved--consult your doctor about an alternative pain medication. The longer you take Vicodin, especially in high doses, the more damage you do physically.
Possible Liver Damage
Vicodin may cause liver damage. Any sign of this must be reported to your doctor immediately. Signs of liver damage include darkened urine, nausea, upper abdominal pain, light-colored stool and a yellowing of your skin or eyes.
Signs of an Overdose
According to Drugs.com, an overdose of Vicodin can be fatal. Signs include a loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, nausea, sweating and confusion. You may also become extremely drowsy, your skin may become cold and clammy, fainting may occur and your lips may turn blue. Your pulse may become weak, your breathing shallow and your pupils as small as pinpoints. If any of these symptoms occur, seek emergency medical attention.
