Side Effects of Keppra Medication

Keppra is an anti-epileptic drug that serves many purposes. It helps manage partial seizures in children and adults over the age of 4, it treats tonic-clonic seizures in children and adults over the age of 6 and myoclonic seizures in children and adults over the age of 12. While it helps control several seizure types, it also has several side effects patients should be aware of.

Keppra's Most Common Side Effects

Keppra has a multitude of common side effects, all of which are fairly harmless. These side effects should begin to go away, or lessen in severity, shortly after beginning Keppra. They include drowsiness, weakness, susceptibility to infections, nasal problems and nervousness. Vomiting and loss of appetite are also associated with this drug, as is coughing. According to eMedTV.com, these common side effects occur in 10 to 23 percent of patients taking Keppra.

Other Common Side Effects

Keppra has additional common side effects which are equally as harmless and occur less frequently. They include dizziness, diarrhea, bruising, constipation and memory loss. Sinus infections and skin discoloration are also common, and ear pain is yet another possible side effect you can suffer from when taking this medication. Neck pain, lack of coordination and double vision are all on the list as well, along with chills, body aches and pink eye. If these side effects do not subside, contact your doctor.

Severe Side Effects

Certain side effects of Keppra are considered severe. If you experience any of these side effects, report them immediately to your doctor. They include emotional changes such as episodes of depression or anxiety, a worsening of your seizures, thoughts of suicide or suicidal behavior, suffering from psychotic hallucinations or delusions and extreme drowsiness that does not improve over time.

Overdose and Allergic Reaction

An overdose or allergic reaction can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. Call 911. Signs of a Keppra overdose include extreme drowsiness, agitation, shallow breathing, fainting, aggression and weakness.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing due to an unexplained swelling of your throat, lips, mouth or face; an unexplained rash; hives and wheezing.
